Today let me introduce to you this scene I captured while travelling the East Coast of India – the Marina Beach in Chennai. The waves hitting the Marina Beach were actually often a lot more rougher than what I’ve experienced in the West coast of India – check for a comparison the video from the West Coast of India and Cavelossim Beach in Goa.

Marina Beach in Chennai

I found Marina Beach was not suitable for swimming, but otherwise very photogenic, especially when crowded.

Second-longest natural urban beach

Marina Beach is a famous natural urban beach in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Stretching 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) along the Bay of Bengal, it is the second-longest natural urban beach in the world. It’s an important tourist attraction in the city and a preferred spot for many locals as well.

The beach is lined with statues and structures that commemorate various historical events and figures. Among them, the statues of Tamil scholars, patriots, and notable political leaders are particularly significant. There are also several structures and memorials on the beach, including the MGR Memorial and Anna Memorial, which are dedicated to former Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu.

Marina Beach can get quite crowded, especially on weekends and during festivals. It’s a popular spot for families to spend time together, and you’ll often find people playing cricket, flying kites, or enjoying horse rides. There are also plenty of food vendors selling local snacks like sundal, murukku, and freshly fried fish.

However, swimming at Marina Beach can be dangerous due to the strong undercurrents, and it’s generally advised not to venture too far into the water.

Over the years, there have been efforts to maintain and clean the beach, but pollution and littering remain challenges.

In addition to being a recreational spot, Marina Beach is also said to have been a place for political rallies and protests, reflecting its significance in the cultural and political life of the city.

Allthough Chennai is very well known for its own film industry, Tamil cinema, which is also known as Kollywood, there was also one nice Bollywood movie filmed over there, called Chennai Express, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.

Back in 2013 when this Chennai Express movie was originally released, it was also seen in theatres in Finland. I reviewed the movie Chennai Express in Finnish here.
