Though I’m such a great fan of Hindi cinema, I need to tell you, that there are also some good movies made in West, which were shot in India.

Those movies, which were shot in India totally or partially, were not all made in Hollywood. Here’s a list of them good Western movies, and many of them have starred review by Indivue.

GOOD WESTERN MOVIES SHOT IN INDIA

  • Slumdog Millionaire (2008), *****

One of the best movies is of course the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire (2008) directed by Danny Boyle and starring Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, with also Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan, familiar from Bollywood films.

  • The man who knew infinity (2015), ****1/2

Another beautiful masterpiece starring Dev Patel was the movie The man who knew infinity (2015) by Matthew Brown. The movie tells the story of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramajunan from the state of Tamil Nadu in India.

  • The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)

The movie Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, directed by John Madden is also starring Dev Patel and some other fabulous British actors like Judi Dench.

  • The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015)

The sequel for the first Marigold Hotel -movie has the same director John Madden and actors like Dev Patel and Judi Dench.

  • Victoria & Abdul (2017), ****

Judi Dench was also recently starring the British movie Victoria & Abdul. This movie is said to be telling the real story of the real-life relationship between Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and her Indian Muslim servant Munshi. The film was visually attractive and got for stars out of five from Indivue.

  • Life of Pi (2012), *****

The American movie Life of Pi was a five star film telling the story of an Indian man Pi, who survives a huge storm in the sea but loses his family in that. Very touching five star drama directed by Ang Lee and with Bollywood stars like Tabu, Irrfan Khan and Adil Hussain in the main roles. This movie had many beautiful and visually impressive scenes from Puducherry, India.

  • Lion (2016), ***½

Lion is an Australian movie and it shot beautifully. It is starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman among brilliant child actors. The movie, based on a true story, is guaranteed to make you cry. Very much recommendable though.

  • Eat, Pray, Love (2010), ***

Eat, Pray, Love was a light American drama starring Julia Roberts, and part of the film was shot in India. Though it was not the best of Julia Roberts’ movies, Eat, Pray, Love was worth seeing at least in a movie theatre. It got three stars out of five from Indivue.

  • The Darjeeling Limited (2007), ***

The Darjeeling Limited -movie, directed by Wes Anderson, tells about three brothers travelling in India by train.

  • Jobs (2013)

The American film about the life of Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, was directed by Joshua Michael Stern. This film, based on true events, takes its viewer also to Delhi, and some other places in India.

  • Partition (2007), ****

Partition is a beautiful yet dramatic and horrifying Canadian film directed by Vic Sarin. It tells a heart braking love story from the time when British India was divided into two in 1947.

  • The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014), *** ½

The movie Hundred-Foot Journey, directed by Lasse Hallström, has got stars like Helen Mirren and Om Puri. It tells a visually nice story about an Indian cook starting a restaurant in Paris, and the difficulties he will face.

  • The Namesake (2006) ****½

The movie The Namesake is a beautiful and stylish Indian-American movie directed by Mira Nair and based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri. The film has got stars like Irrfan Khan and Tabu, whom are well known from Bollywood films.

Mira Nair has made also several other good movies. Other good movies from Nair are Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1997) and Monsoon Wedding (2001). Monsoon wedding can also be found from iTunes, at least in America: *Monsoon Wedding – Mira Nair

  • Viceroy’s House (2017), ****

The movie called Viceroy’s House is a recent impressive historical drama. It tells about how British India was divided, back in 1947. The film is directed by Gurinder Chadha (Bride and Prejudice). The music is by A.R.Rahman. Gillian Anderson (X-files) portrays credibly the Viceroy’s wife in this film.
