Video inspired by holiday food in Goa and India

A Tapestry of Indian Flavors and Unforgettable Experiences

So in January 2019 I embarked on an exhilarating voyage to Goa, India, once again. Now through a meticulously crafted video, I present to you a gastronomic expedition featuring a selection of delightful foods and culinary hotspots, punctuated by the charm of local eateries, fruit stalls, and even organic produce shops. This guide promises to be an inspiring companion for anyone planning to venture into Goa’s culinary scene. What makes this venture even more immersive are the video subtitles in English, Finnish or Swedish, allowing you to engage with the content in the language of your choice—accessible through YouTube settings.

The Gateway through Delhi

My adventure began from Delhi, with a layover at Delhi’s domestic airport. Serving as an appetizer to the ensuing Goan culinary journey, the Delhi airport proved to be treasure trove of delectable bites. They are not your typical airport fast-food stands; there you can sample the rich flavors of India even before you fly further out into the country.

Culinary Stops in South Goa

Portofino

Portofino in Colva offers an incredible medley of Indian and international cuisine. Located by the road eventually leading to Colva beach, it promises not just good food but also a beautiful streetscape that adds to your dining experience.

Sagar Kinara

For authentic Goan cuisine, Sagar Kinara is an unmissable spot. Nestled also in Colva for as long as I remember, this restaurant introduces you to traditional South Indian spices and dishes that are rooted deeply in the local culture. North Indian foods are also there.

German Bakery

Don’t be fooled by the name; German Bakery is a haven for everything from freshly baked goods to freshly squeezed juices. It’s a tranquil locale that marries bakery art with a nice cup of tea. Read also my review post of German Bakery in Benaulim.

Additionally, if you are in the mood for something laid-back, the beach shacks dotting the Goan coastline serve up an array of dishes that are as tantalizing as the views.

Local Delicacies and Stores

I also meandered through local shops and fruit stalls, teeming with fresh produce and regional specialties. One such store was a sweet shop in Margao where I discovered a wonderful array of Indian sweets.

Milk Cake

A simple yet irresistible dairy-based delight, the Indian milk cake is made by simmering milk until it reduces and solidifies. Cardamom adds an aromatic note, making it a comforting treat.

Imarti

Similar to the popular Jalebi, Imarti is an intricate spiral of deep-fried urad dal batter, soaked in sugar syrup. It’s a perfect blend of crunch and sweetness, and a hallmark of Indian festivities.

Gulab Jamun from Kolkata

Imagine a velvety smooth sphere that practically disintegrates upon the merest touch of your tongue—this is the Gulab Jamun from Kolkata. It is made of khoya and deep-fried before being soaked in a cardamom-infused sugar syrup.

Organic Choices

South Goa’s local shops also housed organic options, including various nuts and ‘atta’ (flour). Notably, I found gluten-free atta made from quinoa. When combined with psyllium, it allowed for the preparation of gluten-free rotis, offering a healthy alternative to traditional wheat-based rotis.

An Aerial Delight: Poha on a Flight

The Indian domestic flight from Goa to Delhi surprised me with its offering of Poha—a popular South Indian dish made from flattened rice and spices. Refreshingly, this dish was free from any unhealthy preservatives. See also earlier post how you can make poha at home.

In conclusion, my trip to Goa was a feast not just for the eyes but also for the soul. With each bite and sip, you won’t just be consuming food; you’ll be imbibing the very essence of Goa—a mosaic of flavors, textures, and experiences that are as unforgettable as they are enriching.
