Travel Opus to Bollywood and Hindi movies

Travel Opus to Bollywood and Hindi cinema is one of Indivue’s web publications. Online since 2005 both in Finnish and in English languages. All the articles related to Bollywood, Hindi cinema and Indian movies.

In 2018 Indivue’s Travel Opus to Bollywood renews itself – It will now also guide you to listen to the excellent music from these movies!

In addition you will find plenty of good Bollywood movies to watch. With English subtitles. All this with the guidance of Indivue’s Travel Opus to Bollywood (Fin. Matkaopus Bollywoodiin).

So let us start with the introduction to the Travel Opus to Bollywood, which is a video called a Successful landing in Mumbai (the home of Bollywood). Video, images and music by Indivue.

History of Indian cinema in short

Hindi cinema is known by the name of Bollywood, because they combined the names of Hollywood and Bombay. (Nowadays Bombay is known as Mumbai, and the commercial capital of India.)

Find more articles about Mumbai in English here and Mumbai in Finnish here.

India itself is a huge country where they speak several languages. India has over 20 official languages and the movies are produced with over 30 different languages. The biggest and most important languages are Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Oriya, Malayalam and Bhojpuri.

Movie itself came to India in 7th of July 1896.

The first Indian document was a wrestling match in Mumbai, Hanging Garden, in 1897.

Bollywood itself is over one hundred years old concept. The first Indian silent film Raja Harishchandra was published in 1913, like Indivue mentioned on 21st of June 2012.

Alam Ara in 1931 was the first Indian movie with a sound, and a year later came the first movie with a background music. It was called Chandidas.

The first Indian movie in the Venice Film Festival was seen in 1934. It was called Seeta and it got also the first international reward.

Famous Indian movie awards are National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards, Stardust Awards, Star screen Awards, Bollywood Movie Awards and Zee Cine Awards.

The first Indian movie with singing was Bhagya Shakra in 1935.

The first commercially successful movie in India was Chandra Lekha in 1948.

The Indivue Travel Opus to Bollywood in Finnish tells you about the Bollywood movie premieres also. The previous link will tell you what was happening last year, in 2017. Most of those movies have come for sale by now!

If you wish to read and see all that Indivue has written about Hindi cinema in Finnish in the past, then follow the preceding link. You will get to read hundreds of articles.

In 2016 Indivue wrote in Finnish an article about

The Best of Bollywood movies in 2000-2016

The five star movies were these:

  • Bajrangi Bhaijaan 2015 *****

  • Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela 2013 *****
  • PK 2014 *****

The linking music samples attached here tell you some essential names behind the music in Hindi movies, like Lata Mangehskar, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Lucky Ali, Shreya Goshal and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

It is good to mention that all the Indian movies reviewed in Indivue have been seen through Western eyeglasses. That way much of the movie experience is based on translated English subtitles made by somebody else. This might also explain why some masterpieces in Hindi cinema do not ring the bell of the Finnish viewer. And it goes vice versa as well, of course.

It might be very interesting for an Indian to see, what do the Western people like in Bollywood.

Find the Bollywood movies and their reviews here:

The first Bollywood movie I saw in an Indian movie theatre was called Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and that was in Mumbai back in 2006, and in Regal Cinema. Find the article about that movie and Regal Cinema here. Those were the poor days for bloggers, when computers were withering slow and internet connections between Europe and India even more slower.

Some ten years later I got to see another movie in an Indian movie theatre, and that was Shamitabh, a movie partially shot in Finland.

But dvds and blurays have always been my number one because those movies had English subtitles in them. Luckily nowadays it is easy to see Bollywood movies with English subtitles also through Apple and iTunes.
