July 27th, 2024, will be a significant day in the history of music, since on that day the world-famous British band Coldplay played their first ever concert in Finland. The event was held at Helsinki’s Olympia Stadium, which was filled with eager fans who had been waiting for this moment for decades. Coldplay played total 4 concerts in a row in Helsinki, Finland, which means also on July 28th, 30th and 31st. Tickets went on sale one year earlier, as I blogged last summer.

First Coldplay concert night on July 27th, 2024
For many, Coldplay’s first gig in Finland started already in the afternoon, when fans started gathering at the stadium before the doors opened at 5 p.m. Helsinki’s Olympia Stadium, which is known for its sporting events and big concerts, was in its full glory ready to receive one of the biggest bands in the world. The Finnish Alma and the British Maisie Peters, who was also seen warming up Ed Sheeran at the stadium in 2022, performed as Coldplay’s warm-ups.
Around nine in the evening, the audience in the stadium started applauding the band on stage, but instead of the band, a couple of Finnish presenters came on stage to talk about the importance of forest protection. After half past ten, Coldplay took the stage, accompanied by orchestral playback music, and band members Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion immediately got the crowd cheering. Chris Martin kissed the ground below and the Music of the Spheres concert started with the band’s hit song “Higher Power”. The stadium was filled with energy and joy, the audience sang along and the wristbands flashed different colored lights. In the attached video you can see the beginning of the Coldplay concert and the first song Higher Power –
Coldplay concert songs and special moments
Coldplay’s concert songlist included hits from throughout their career, including these following songs and many more:
Yellow
Fix You
Paradise
The Scientist
Sparks
Higher Power, Viva La Vida, Feels like I’m falling in love, etc.

The band’s visual performance became even more impressive as the evening got darker, and more fireworks were also seen. In addition to music, Coldplay’s concert included talking and singing with the audience, as well as colorful lights, laser shows and confetti showers.
One of the most touching moments of the evening was experienced when Chris Martin spoke in Finnish after the song “The Scientist” to his Finnish fans, who had been waiting for the band for a long time. Martin welcomed the audience in Finnish language and emotionally told from the stage how great it was to finally be able to perform in Finland and thanked the audience for their steadfast support. You can see Chris Martin speaking Finnish at 5:04 in The Scientist video.

Additional Coldplay gigs on July 28th, 30th and 31st and life without a concert ticket
So Coldplay organized a total of four concerts in Finland, which took place on July 27th, 28th, 30th and 31st at the Olympia Stadium. Every gig was sold out and a huge crowd had also gathered outside the stadium and on the nearby rocks. Coldplay’s music could be heard in certain places around the stadium and from one corner you could also catch a glimpse of Chris Martin from the same distance as if you were sitting inside the stadium far opposite the stage. In addition, the fireworks were better visible outside the stadium than in some seats next to the speakers in the stadium. Those who missed out on concert tickets, like my good friend I told you about last summer, can still enjoy the Coldplay concert with the help of YouTube videos for now.

Next Coldplay will be heading to Vienna. Read and watch more Helsinki and Vienna from my visual online travel guide to Europe in the link attached.
You can read this article about the first ever Coldplay concert in Helsinki, Finland, originally in Finnish here.
Also watch the video, how a Coldplay fan got to sing together with Chris Martin on stage at Coldplay’s first ever concert in Finland.
The video of Coldplay’s song Sparks shows how Coldplay performed nicely on a small stage built at the other end of the stadium.
I personally liked a lot of the rewind technique used by Coldplay, which was seen together with the sound before the performance of Viva La Vida.
Chris Martin told the Finnish audience to close their eyes and imagine random fireworks, since there were so much light late in the evening in Finland that the expensive Coldplay light show almost got wasted. But during the 2 hour concert it became dark and lights were well presented for example in the song Feels like I’m falling in love.
If you want to see how I felt about Coldplay’s song Yellow, watch the video at this link 🙂 and you will also get to see a close-up of the Coldplay wrist.
Btw. Did you know that Helsinki leads the Coldplay’s concert wristband return statistics together with Tokyo with a 97% wristband return rate?
