Capital Region of Finland

HELSINKI
Helsinki is the capital of Finland and home to more than 650,000 residents. Surrounded by the Baltic Sea, the city combines Nordic architecture, maritime landscapes, innovative design, culture, and a vibrant food scene. Visitors can explore iconic landmarks such as Suomenlinna, Helsinki Cathedral, Oodi Library, and Esplanadi Park while enjoying excellent public transport connections including metro, tram, bus, and ferry services.
If you are planning a trip to Helsinki, read my detailed visual guide “Top 10 Things to Do in Helsinki”, explore my Helsinki Travel Video Collection, and follow the guide regularly as new attractions, cafés, museums, restaurants, and local experiences are continuously added.
The city is also known for major cultural events such as Helsinki Design Week, the Helsinki Book Fair, and numerous summer festivals taking place across the waterfront districts and parks.
HELSINKI ART
Contemporary art lovers should also explore the Helsinki Biennial exhibitions, which bring large-scale contemporary art to Helsinki’s archipelago environment.
For museum visitors, my guide to art museums in Helsinki also includes information about free admission days at many museums across the city, including museums such as Amos Rex.
You can also discover Helsinki’s café culture through unique locations such as a peaceful seaside café in Munkkiniemi.

ESPOO
Espoo is one of the largest cities in Finland and forms part of the Helsinki metropolitan area alongside nearby Helsinki. Located directly west of the Finnish capital, Espoo is easily accessible from central Helsinki by metro, train, or bus. The western metro extension, with several new stations opened in late 2022, has made travelling between Helsinki and Espoo faster and more convenient than ever.
Home to around 300,000 residents, Espoo combines modern urban living with extensive natural landscapes, forests, lakes, and seaside scenery. The city is especially appealing for travellers and residents who appreciate nature, outdoor activities, and peaceful surroundings while still remaining close to the services and cultural life of the capital region.
Visitors to Espoo can explore destinations such as Nuuksio National Park, known for its forests, hiking trails, lakes, and Finnish wilderness experiences, or visit Pentala Archipelago Museum on Pentala Island to discover traditional archipelago life and coastal culture.
In addition to nature attractions, Espoo also offers museums, theatres, shopping centres, waterfront areas, and modern residential districts connected by efficient public transport.
Read my Espoo travel guide to discover some of the city’s most beautiful places, nature destinations, and local experiences.

VANTAA
Vantaa is part of the Helsinki metropolitan area and serves as an important gateway to Finland thanks to Helsinki Airport, the country’s main international airport. With a population of around 240,000 residents, Vantaa combines modern transport connections, family-friendly attractions, hotels, shopping areas, and growing urban districts.
Many travellers first arrive in Finland through Vantaa, but the city also offers worthwhile experiences beyond the airport area. Visitors can explore Heureka Science Centre, one of Finland’s best-known interactive science museums, or spend time in the lively Tikkurila district with its restaurants, services, cultural venues, and train connections.
Vantaa is very well connected to nearby Helsinki through direct trains and bus services, making it convenient both for airport stopovers and longer stays in the capital region.
The city also offers a good selection of airport hotels, making it a practical base for early flights, business travel, or short visits to southern Finland. For food and travel comfort, one recommended experience is visiting a business lounge at Helsinki Airport before departure or during transit.
Southern Finland

PORVOO
Porvoo is one of the oldest and most picturesque towns in Finland, known especially for its charming riverside scenery, colourful wooden houses, historic atmosphere, and cosy cafés. With a population of around 50,000 residents, Porvoo offers visitors a combination of Finnish history, culture, small-town charm, and beautiful waterfront views only a short distance from Helsinki.
The heart of the city is Old Porvoo, a beautifully preserved old town filled with narrow cobblestone streets, traditional red riverside warehouses, boutique shops, cafés, and historic buildings. One of the town’s most important landmarks is Porvoo Cathedral, which has stood at the centre of local history for centuries.
Porvoo is also a wonderful destination for food lovers and café culture enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy riverside cafés, local restaurants, summer terraces, and even unique dining experiences such as a Nepali restaurant in the town centre. During warmer months, the ice cream kiosks by the river are among the most popular places to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the old town.

LOVIISA
Loviisa is a charming small coastal town in southern Finland known for its historic wooden houses, peaceful atmosphere, maritime character, and cultural heritage. With a population of around 15,000 residents, Loviisa offers visitors a quieter side of Finland with picturesque streets, local cafés, old architecture, and nearby countryside landscapes.
One of the region’s best-known attractions is Strömfors Iron Works, a beautifully preserved historic ironworks village surrounded by rivers, old industrial buildings, artisan workshops, restaurants, and small boutiques. The area is especially popular during summer and seasonal events, when visitors can explore the historic environment and enjoy the atmosphere of one of Finland’s oldest ironworks communities.
Another notable sight is Malmgård Manor which has noble history, organic farming and timeless atmosphere.
Loviisa is an excellent destination for travellers interested in Finnish small-town life, local history, riverside scenery, old architecture, and slower-paced travel experiences along the southern coast of Finland.
