History of Indian cinema in short

Hindi cinema is also known by the name of Bollywood, because they combined the names of Hollywood and Bombay. Other theories have also been made about the birth of this concept. Nowadays Bombay is known as Mumbai, and as the commercial capital of India.

India itself is a huge country where people speak several languages. India has over 20 official languages and Indian movies are produced with over 30 different languages. The biggest and most important languages are Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Oriya, Malayalam and Bhojpuri.

Movie itself came to India in 7th of July 1896.

The first Indian document was a wrestling match in Mumbai, Hanging Garden, in 1897.

Bollywood itself is over one hundred years old concept. The first Indian silent film Raja Harishchandra was published in 1913, as I mentioned in 21st of June 2012.

Alam Ara in 1931 was the first Indian movie with a sound, and a year later came the first movie with a background music. That movie was called Chandidas.

The first Indian movie in the Venice Film Festival was seen in 1934. It was called Seeta and it got also the first international reward.

Famous Indian movie awards are National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards, Stardust Awards, Star screen Awards, Bollywood Movie Awards and Zee Cine Awards.

The first Indian movie with singing was Bhagya Shakra in 1935.

The first commercially successful movie in India was Chandra Lekha in 1948.

These music samples here, provided by Apple Music, will tell you some essential names behind the music in Hindi movies, like Lata Mangehskar, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Lucky Ali, Shreya Goshal and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

It is worth mentioning that all the movies reviewed by INDIVUE have been seen through Western eyeglasses. That way much of the movie experience is based on translation and English subtitles made by somebody else. This might explain why some Hindi cinema masterpiece does not ring the bell of the Finnish viewer. And this goes vice versa as well, of course.

In any case, it will be interesting for an Indian to see what Western people like in Bollywood. That’s one more reason to write this Indivue – Trip to Bollywood.

The first Bollywood movie I saw in an Indian movie theatre was called Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and that was in Regal Cinema in Mumbai back in 2006. Those were the poor days for bloggers, when computers were withering slow and internet connections between Europe and India even more slower. Even today some big blog article in Indivue.com, like All the Salman Khan -movies, can take some time to open.

Some ten years later after Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna I managed to see another movie in an Indian movie theatre, and that was Shamitabh. The movie had been shot in Finland, partially, and it was the first movie as such.

But because of them essential subtitles, dvds and blurays were always my favourites. Luckily nowadays it is easy to see Bollywood movies with English subtitles also through Apple and iTunes.

When you don’t need the art to be packed in plastic covers, the art is less of an environmental burden.
