Located on Pengerkatu in the vibrant Kallio-Sörnäinen district of Helsinki, Peace Kitchen is a small and distinctive restaurant focusing on vegan Thai food with a creative twist. It stands out with its food but also for its unconventional setting and relaxed, slightly bohemian atmosphere.

Peace Kitchen Kallio is a place with personality. It’s not about perfection or luxury, but about good food, a relaxed atmosphere, and a unique dining setup. The food alone makes this restaurant worth visiting – especially if you are curious about vegan Thai cuisine done right in Helsinki.

Atmosphere and Setting

Peace Kitchen is not a typical restaurant experience. The space is compact, and part of its charm comes from its unique layout:

  • narrow staircase leads to the upstairs dining area
  • Guests sit on the floor at low tables, creating a casual and intimate setting
  • The overall vibe is laid-back, slightly “hippie”, and personal rather than polished

During summer, the restaurant extends outdoors with a small street terrace on Pengerkatu, which adds to the neighborhood feel.

It’s worth noting that the surrounding Kallio streets can sometimes feel a bit restless or rough around the edges, especially in the evenings, and if you’re eating on the terrace. However, the location is very convenient – Sörnäinen metro station is just a short walk away.

Food – Vegan Thai with a Twist

The focus at Peace Kitchen is on vegan Thai cuisine, but not in a strictly traditional sense. The dishes have a creative twist, and the menu is not identical to its sister restaurant, Vegan Thai Kitchen in Kamppi, Helsinki center.

In fact, there are certain dishes available only at Peace Kitchen, including at least one standout dish, the name of which I can’t remember – that is not offered at the Kamppi location – a detail that makes this place worth visiting even if you are familiar with its sister restaurant.

Overall, the food quality is:

  • Consistently very good
  • Often excellent, deserving high praise
  • Among the best Thai food experiences (vegan or otherwise) I’ve ever had in Helsinki

The flavors are satisfying and well-balanced, and the kitchen clearly knows what it’s doing. But although the food tastes nice and looks delicious, lots of preservatives have been used, which means some things are not fresh – and I assume it can be the sauces.

A Small Drawback

The only clear negative experience mentioned relates to takeaway food:

  • A takeaway salad portion was very small (just a handful)
  • Price was almost 8 euros, which feels high for the quantity
  • And compared to many restaurants (especially Indian ones), similar size of salads are often included for free, which made this feel underwhelming

Practical Notes

  • The restaurant is small, so seating can be limited
  • Service is friendly and welcoming
  • I have not tested their lunch, so the review reflects dinner and à la carte experience

Who Should Visit Pease Kitchen

Peace Kitchen is a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy vegan food with strong flavors (mild versions also available)
  • Want something different from standard restaurant setups
  • Appreciate independent, slightly alternative places

It may not be ideal if you:

  • Prefer traditional table seating
  • Are looking for a polished or upscale dining environment
  • Expect large takeaway portions
