Filmed in Helsinki on 28 August 2026, this travel video takes you on a journey through Finnish design, architecture and nature – as well as something that really looks like a UFO.
The day begins at Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden, where Marimekko meets the Futuro House as part of the Helsinki Design Week programme. Even the clouds seemed to cooperate, adding a touch of Van Gogh to the sky.
Designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen in 1968, the Futuro House represented the bold, forward-looking design of its era. Nearly 60 years later, American architectural heritage expert Jan van Dijs brings Futuro back into the spotlight. The installation celebrates Suuronen’s legacy while offering fresh perspectives on Marimekko’s distinctive art of pattern design.
I also explore other parts of Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden, including its outdoor garden and atmospheric glasshouses. You will see how the garden blooms in late summer, right in the heart of Helsinki. With its beautiful plants and historic glasshouses, Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden is a peaceful green oasis in the city.
The Futuro House is on display at Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden from 28 August to 6 September 2026, and the glasshouses are open throughout the Helsinki Design Week festival.
