I stopped by the Flow Festival in Helsinki to listen to and film Zara Larsson, and I have to say I absolutely loved all the bling-bling that the huge video screens brought to the audience’s eyes late in the evening. Zara Larsson’s Midnight Sun, featured in this video, turned out to be a particularly delightful earworm – after editing the video, I had the song playing in my head for a couple of days.

Working on this video also confirmed something I had noticed during the concert: at times, it looked as though the musicians on stage were playing out of sync. The live feed on the giant screens appeared with a slight delay, which made the drummer and keyboard player look as if they were playing something completely different from what we were hearing. You can see it yourself when you watch the video. The still image I captured, showing Zara Larsson simultaneously on stage and on the screen but in two different poses, confirms that there was indeed a delay. In the end, though, it didn’t really interfere with enjoying the concert – especially if you’d had a few drinks, like all those people standing behind me and singing along at the top of their lungs.

Have you ever thought about how brilliantly Zara Larsson, intentionally or not, promotes travel in Finland and Scandinavia with this song, where the midnight sun can be experienced once every year? Just imagine if I had filmed this same Midnight Sun video in June, when it would have had light throughout the night! There would have been no need to close your eyes and imagine fireworks, as Chris Martin encouraged the audience to do during Coldplay’s concert at Helsinki Olympic Stadium.

This summer, I almost got to experience the midnight sun myself. Unfortunately, the trip to Northern Norway and Finnish Lapland, which I had been planning for almost a year, was cancelled just a few weeks before departure.

I got over the disappointment by booking a couple of other amazing trips – more about those later – and buying a ticket to Flow Festival.

So this was as close as I got to the midnight sun this year, and my English-speaking audience still won’t find the real Lapland in my Finland Travel Guide or on my social media channels. But check my short video how the Midnight sun looks like in Helsinki
