Café Coffee Day, widely known as CCD, is one of India’s most recognizable café chains and a key player in shaping the country’s modern coffee culture. It was established in 1996, and it was among the first brands to transform coffee drinking in India from a traditional, home-based habit into a social and lifestyle experience.
It had a memorable tagline “A Lot Can Happen Over Coffee,” and with that the brand positioned itself as a place to grab a beverage and as a social hub for conversations, meetings, and relaxation.

Origins and Founder
V. G. Siddhartha, the founder of Café Coffee Day, was a visionary entrepreneur from Karnataka. Coming from a family involved in coffee plantation, he recognized the potential of India’s coffee market early on.
- The first CCD outlet opened in Bangalore (now Bengaluru) in 1996
- The brand grew rapidly in urban centers across India
- It introduced café culture to a generation of young Indians
Siddhartha’s integrated business model—from coffee plantations to retail cafés—allowed CCD to maintain control over quality and pricing.
Expansion and Growth
Coffee Day Enterprises expanded aggressively in the 2000s. At its peak:
- CCD had over 1,700 outlets across India
- It operated also short periods in multiple countries, including Austria and Malaysia
- It diversified into vending machines, exports, and hospitality
CCD outlets became a familiar sight in malls, high streets, highways, and corporate hubs. Even I, though coming from Finland, have visited Cafe Coffee Day in both East and West coast of India and the capital as well.

The Café Experience
Café Coffee Day created a unique café environment tailored to Indian consumers:
Ambience
- Casual, affordable, and youth-friendly
- Comfortable seating suitable for long stays
- Popular among students, couples, and professionals
Menu Highlights
- Espresso-based drinks (cappuccino, latte, mocha)
- Cold coffees and frappés
- Quick bites such as sandwiches, wraps, and desserts
- Seasonal and localized menu innovations
CCD’s pricing strategy made café culture accessible to a wider audience compared to premium international chains.
I was praising Cafe Coffee Day’s Indian cappuccino in my Finnish travel blog back in 2010, and in 2011 I gave their pizza slice a full five stars, because it was so nice pizza with an Indian twist. Actually the best pizza I’ve ever tasted in India.

Cultural Impact in India
CCD played a significant role in shaping urban social life:
- Became a default meeting spot for young people
- Popular venue for first dates and casual business meetings
- Helped normalize spending time in cafés rather than traditional eateries
- Inspired the growth of competing chains and independent cafés
For many Indians in the 2000s, CCD was their first exposure to global-style coffee culture. And for me in the 2000s it was my first exposure to Indian café culture.
Challenges and Transformation
In recent years, CCD has faced several challenges:
- Increased competition from international brands like Starbucks and local specialty cafés – For example, when I previously visited Delhi NCR some years back, the Great India shopping mall was having a CCD inside, but the other new shopping mall in Noida was having a huge Starbucks dominating the sceneries even outside the mall.
- Changing consumer preferences toward premium and artisanal coffee
- Financial difficulties following the death of founder V. G. Siddhartha in 2019.
Despite these setbacks, the brand has been undergoing restructuring and focusing on sustainability and profitability.
Café Coffee Day Today
In todays time, Café Coffee Day continues to evolve:
- Streamlining operations and closing underperforming outlets
- Introducing smaller, more efficient café formats
- Strengthening its core identity as an affordable coffee brand
- Leveraging its plantation-to-cup model
While its footprint has reduced compared to its peak, CCD remains an iconic name in India’s café landscape.
For travelers exploring India, a visit to Café Coffee Day offers a safe cup of coffee and also a glimpse into the country’s urban lifestyle transformation over the past three decades.
