*ad with Ikaalinen Hotel & Spa restaurants
Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Kyrösjärvi in the Pirkanmaa region, Ikaalinen Spa & Resort is one of Finland’s best-known traditional spa destinations. Approximately 55 kilometres northwest of Tampere, the resort combines accommodation, spa experiences, saunas, restaurants, entertainment and outdoor activities in a peaceful lakeside setting. Watch my video I made of Ikaalinen Spa and it’s restaurants –
The heart of the resort is the Water Tropic spa, where visitors can enjoy warm pools, hot tubs and water activities for different ages. Those looking for an especially Finnish wellness experience can also visit the resort’s sauna world, while massages and other treatments offer further opportunities to relax. During the warmer months, the surrounding lake scenery, beach and outdoor areas add another dimension to the holiday. The resort is suitable for a romantic weekend, a family break or simply a short escape from everyday routines. Ikaalinen Spa & Resort also offers a varied programme of concerts, dancing, wellness classes and seasonal events.
Restaurants at Ikaalinen Spa & Resort
Dining is an important part of the Ikaalinen Spa experience. The resort has several restaurants and bars, ranging from casual family-friendly choices to more refined à la carte dining. This makes it easy to spend an entire holiday within the resort without having to travel elsewhere for meals.
À la Carte Tuomarla is the resort’s main choice for a leisurely dinner. I had a very tasty fish which was caught from the local nearby lake. The restaurant is named after a local village, and it concentrates on carefully prepared dishes and a more elegant dining experience. It is a good option for couples, celebrations and guests who want to finish their spa day with a proper sit-down meal. You can see my dinner and the lemonade drink in the video I made.
For a more informal atmosphere, Plaza Social Kitchen serves pizzas, pasta, salads and deli-style dishes. Its relaxed concept works particularly well for families and groups, while desserts, ice cream and speciality coffees make it equally suitable for a lighter break during the day. Pizza was tasty and non-alcoholic drinks were feast for the eye, as you can see from the video.
Restaurant Kyrös is the resort’s largest restaurant and serves the hotel breakfast as well as lunch on selected days. The restaurant is also used for buffets, group meals, celebrations and entertainment events. The generous breakfast provides a convenient start to a day of swimming, treatments or outdoor activities. I really loved having my buffet breakfast outside on the terrace on a warm summer morning.
Guests can also stop at Old Ikaly Pub, a casual meeting place with a selection of beers and other drinks. Spa Bar Tropical serves refreshments close to the pools, allowing visitors to enjoy a drink without leaving the spa atmosphere. I loved to have a drink while relaxing in a hot tub amidst bubbles. It gave a true holiday atmosphere. And yes, in Finland it is quite common to share the hot tub with strangers, and there is no need to feel shy.
In summer, the seasonal Ikanema Beach Bar brings food and refreshments closer to the shores of Lake Kyrösjärvi. You can take for example a cup of ice-cream or tea and enjoy it while sitting on the pier admiring the lake views, like I did on this video.
The availability and opening hours of individual restaurants in Ikaalinen Spa & Resort may vary according to the season and the resort’s event programme, so they should be checked before visiting. See the resort’s current restaurants and dining options.
With its combination of warm pools, Finnish sauna culture, lakeside nature and varied restaurants, Ikaalinen Spa & Resort offers considerably more than an ordinary hotel stay. It is a self-contained holiday destination where a relaxing day can begin with a swim, continue with a treatment or walk by the lake or a round of minigolf in the yard and end with dinner in one of the resort’s restaurants.
A relaxing massage at Ikaalinen Spa
During my stay at Ikaalinen Spa, I treated myself to a one-hour full-body massage followed by a relaxing head massage. The spa area had a peaceful atmosphere, and the comfortable treatment room provided a pleasant setting in which to unwind.
The massage therapist worked with professional and confident techniques throughout the treatment. However, my muscles were particularly tense, and afterwards I felt that some areas of my body were still tight. In my case, one treatment was probably not quite enough, and I might have benefited from several massage sessions. Nevertheless, the experience offered a calming break and complemented my relaxing stay at the spa.
What I enjoyed the most, however, was alternating between the steam sauna and the hot tub. Moving back and forth between the two was especially relaxing. During my visit, the sauna world at Ikaalinen Spa was being renovated, and the plans looked very promising. Unfortunately, I did not have an opportunity to experience the renewed area at the time.
Overall, compared with a spa I visited in Central Europe in summer 2026, the Finnish approach to spa culture felt more hygienic and carefully maintained. Following my visit to the Central European spa and swimming pools, I developed an ear infection that required a course of antibiotics. By contrast, I experienced no such problems after visiting the clean and well-maintained spa facilities in Ikaalinen. Finns do tend to be rather particular when it comes to cleanliness — and in a spa, that is certainly a positive quality.
How to get to Ikaalinen Spa & Resort without a car
If you would like to experience a truly Finnish spa holiday, Ikaalinen Spa & Resort is an excellent place to do so. Although Ikaalinen is officially a town, the resort itself stands beside open fields in a beautiful rural setting. Despite its peaceful location, it is conveniently accessible from the nearby main road.
I was able to travel there and back from Helsinki easily by public transport with OnniBus – OnniBus: Helsinki–Ikaalisten kylpylä – It took some 3,5 hours one way. My bus journey took me via Tampere, Finland’s third-largest city, before continuing through the countryside towards Ikaalinen. This made the resort a surprisingly convenient destination for a relaxing spa break, even without a car.
