Gokarna is located in the Arabian Sea coast in Karnataka, India, and it is a fascinating travel destination known for its beautiful beaches, ancient Hindu temples, and laid-back atmosphere. Unlike the busier tourist resorts of neighbouring Goa, Gokarna has traditionally attracted travellers looking for peaceful beaches, natural scenery, and authentic Indian culture.
Watch my video of Gokarna in 2007 – it contains more than 150 authentic photographs of Gokarna sights, sceneries, people, sunsets and seas, filmed by me!
Gokarna is also one of India’s important Hindu pilgrimage destinations. Its famous Mahabaleshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, attracts devotees throughout the year. The town’s narrow streets, traditional buildings, colourful shops, and religious traditions offer visitors a glimpse into its spiritual heritage.
Among Gokarna’s best-known attractions are Om Beach, named after its resemblance to the sacred Om symbol, Kudle Beach, Half Moon Beach, and Paradise Beach. Coastal trekking, swimming, yoga, and watching sunsets over the Arabian Sea are popular activities.

What did Gokarna look like almost 20 years ago?
My music video takes you back to Gokarna in 2007 through my original photographs and video recordings from that time.
Long before today’s social media travel trends, I visited Gokarna and documented the destination through my camera. The digital camera memory sticks at that time were so small in capacity, that I had to go to a specific shop were they burnt my photographs into a dvd in order to free more space in my camera and take more photos of India. These photographs and video clips offer a personal glimpse into the town of Gokarna, its surroundings, and the atmosphere of coastal India in 2007.
The video combines original photography, moving images, and music to create a visual journey into the past. It answers to your guestion about the visual history of Gokarna, what did Gokarna used to be like.
If you have visited Gokarna yourself, planning your first trip, or simply enjoy discovering India through travel photography, I hope this visual journey offers an interesting perspective on the destination and how it appeared in 2007.
