  • Buland Darwaza in Fatehpur Sikri, India

Buland Darwaza in Fatehpur Sikri, India

    13/12/2017

    (Updated 8/2023)

This Indivue video takes you ten years back in India, to a small town named Fatehpur Sikri in Agra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and to a sight called Buland Darwaza. It is the main entrance to a famous muslim mosque there.

Buland Darwaza is not just a gateway but a symbol of architectural excellence and historical richness. Its colossal size, intricate designs, and profound cultural impact have solidified its status as one of India’s most iconic landmarks. As a part of the Fatehpur Sikri complex, it continues to draw the attention of historians, architects, and tourists alike, making it an enduring emblem of India’s cultural legacy.

The view from Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri

Buland Darwaza: The Grand Gateway of Fatehpur Sikri

Buland Darwaza is one of the most extraordinary architectural gems in India. Standing at 54 meters, it holds the record for the tallest gateway in the world. Located in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra in the state of Uttar Pradesh, Buland Darwaza is an imposing gateway that serves as the main entrance to the Fatehpur Sikri complex.

    Historical Background

Constructed around 1576 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, Buland Darwaza commemorates his victory over Gujarat. The construction of this architectural marvel is believed to have taken about 12 years to complete.

The gateway’s name, “Buland,” translates to “High” or “Great” in Persian, epitomizing its grandeur. Buland Darwaza stands as a symbol of the Mughal Empire’s strength and dominance during the time.

    Architectural Design

The design of Buland Darwaza is an impeccable blend of Persian and Mughal architecture. It is constructed out of red and buff sandstone, adorned with intricate white marble inlays and carvings.

    Structure

Buland Darwaza is semi-octagonal in plan and is topped by pillars and chhatris (dome-shaped pavilions). The gateway consists of three arched entrances, with the central one being the largest. The total height of the structure, including the domes, is around 54 meters, making it a marvel to behold.

    Inscriptions

One of the most intriguing aspects of Buland Darwaza is the inscriptions found on its surface. These inscriptions include verses from the Quran and the teachings of Jesus Christ, as if displaying Akbar’s liberal views on religion.

    Ornamentation

The facade of Buland Darwaza is adorned with exquisite carvings and inlays. The white and black marble decorations, coupled with calligraphic inscriptions, add to its aesthetic appeal.

    Impact on Indian Architecture

Buland Darwaza’s architectural brilliance has left an indelible mark on Indian architecture. Its fusion of various architectural styles serves as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of India. This structure has inspired several other architectural projects and continues to be a prominent study model for architects and historians.

    Tourism

Buland Darwaza attracts tourists from all over the world. Its grandeur and historical significance make it a must-visit site for those interested in Indian history and architecture. The Fatehpur Sikri complex, where Buland Darwaza is located, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is well-maintained to preserve its magnificence.

Video of the Kuusamo hills and ruska in Finland

    03/12/2017

This video is from the landscapes of Kuusamo in North of Finland. Some say Kuusamo is not yet Lapland, but to me it looked very much like it. This video was shot on top of Ruka during the ruska time in September, when the weather is cool and the trees are colourful.
