    Viking Line 2021 Christmas Buffet

Viking Line, renowned for its impeccable service and attention to culinary detail, offers a daily route connecting Helsinki and Stockholm. In 2021, their Christmas buffet showcases an exquisite blend of traditional Finnish and Swedish Christmas delicacies, capturing the essence of the festive season from both countries. The buffet featured an array of starters including classic ham, various fish dishes, and a selection of laatikkoruoka (Finnish casserole dishes) and Janssoninkiusaus (Jansson’s Temptation, a traditional Swedish casserole).

The 2021 Christmas buffet stood out for its impressive array of vegetarian options and side dishes, thoughtfully seasoned to echo the warmth of the holiday season. In a commendable effort to minimize food waste, these delightful culinary creations were served in small, environmentally friendly portions, beautifully presented in charming wooden boats and elegant glass cups. I was especially pleased with the vegetarian dishes and the side dishes which were seasoned for Christmas.

A notable aspect of Viking Line’s 2021 Christmas buffet was its responsiveness to passenger preferences. Innovative additions like glazed tofu and dishes infused with ginger and star anise were introduced, catering to diverse palates. Adventurous diners had the opportunity to indulge in unique flavors such as rosehip-pepper herring or ginsilla – a dish enhanced with juniper berries and rosemary.

Janne Lindholm, the mastermind behind Viking Line’s Christmas buffet, highlighted the collaborative effort in curating the menu. Contributions from the ship’s chefs and the longstanding partnership with the Swedish national chef team played a pivotal role in crafting an authentic and varied Christmas table. Lindholm noted the subtle differences in Christmas food traditions between Finland and Sweden, with Swedes favoring dishes like Jansson’s Temptation, roast ribs, and meatballs, whereas Finns have a particular affinity for various casseroles.

Sustainability and local sourcing are at the heart of Viking Line’s culinary philosophy. The Christmas buffet primarily featured ingredients sourced from Finland and its neighboring regions including Sweden, Estonia, and Northern Europe. The commitment to local sourcing is evident in their choice of Swedish hams, Finnish dairy products, and salmon sourced from Sweden or Norway based on availability. Lindholm emphasized the challenge of balancing large-scale supply without compromising on quality, a testament to Viking Line’s dedication to excellence.

The presentation of the food was meticulously planned, with smaller portion sizes being a strategic move to reduce food waste. About one-fifth of the dishes were served in ready-made portions, creatively arranged in tiny wooden boats, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and hygiene standards.

The buffet also catered to younger guests with a selection of kid-friendly options like french fries, nuggets, and chicken legs from Ville Viking’s table, while the Christmas tree candy shelf offered a delightful array of loose candies, arguably overshadowing the traditional dessert offerings.

Viking Line’s Christmas buffet was a harmonious fusion of Finnish flavors with a Swedish twist, available on all Viking Line ships starting from November 18th, 2021. The buffet restaurant on board the M/S Gabriella was especially noteworthy for its enchanting ambience, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of Christmas. This culinary experience aboard Viking Line was not just a meal but a celebration of Nordic Christmas traditions, leaving passengers with lasting memories of a festive journey between two vibrant capitals.

This video takes you to Humayun’s Tomb in New Delhi, India. The video of this famous sightseeing place in New Delhi was filmed ten years ago in January, which is why the sunset looks beautiful and you will see no pollution.

In this video you will get to see Humayun’s Tomb 1565-72 a.d. and Bu Halima Enclosure from 16th century. It is said that “Hamida Banu Begum, Humayun’s grieving widow, built Emperor Humayun’s mausoleum. Precursor to the Taj Mahal, it stands on a platform of 12000m2 and reaches a height of 47m2. The earliest example of Persian influence in Indian architecture, the tomb has within it over 100 graves, earning it the name ‘Dormitory of the Mughals. Built of rubble masonry, the structure is the first to use red sandstone and white marble in such great quantities. The small canopies of the terrace were originally covered in glazed blue tiles.”

  • Hotel from where you can see Taj Mahal in India

Many people dream to see the Taj Mahal in India and I can say that the experience is really all that worth it. Taj Mahal is called one of the seven wonders of the world for a reason. Check out the video I made!

When you have effortlessly saved your travel money and finally head towards Agra, India and the Taj Mahal, your next question would be what is the best time of the day to see Taj Mahal. Ideal situation would be if you could see the Taj Mahal in the morning, day, evening and also in the night in the moonlight. Most of the time, however, that just isn’t possible for a common tourist.

One solution to this could be to choose a hotel from where you can see the Taj Mahal from your hotel room. I tried this a few years ago and based on that, if your schedule is tight, I would really recommend such a hotel with a view of the Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal is especially captivating at sunrise and sunset, so if you plan to visit there during midday, the sunset view of the Taj Mahal as seen from the hotel terrace could provide a better overall experience of your trip to Agra and the Taj Mahal.

My hotel was called Taj Plaza, which was an ok three star hotel in Agra. The interior of the hotel was not pristine, but not broken either. The hotel had rooms with direct views of the Taj Mahal Mausoleum, and the rooftop terrace was a nice place to watch the sun setting and rising, making the Taj Mahal’s domed ceiling glitter in different shades of white. In the hotel’s roof terrace you could also enjoy a restaurant dinner while listening to local street life. Early in the morning, as the sun was rising, I was able to listen amazing birds singing outside, and the prayer invitations to the mosques also echoed around everywhere.

In winter time, air conditioning is not necessary in Agra, but for summer times, AC was found in the rooms at Taj Plaza. There was no heating in the rooms during the winter, but thick woolen blankets ensured that you could sleep at night without freezing.

The hotel room was decorated with bright red wallpaper patterned with golden yellow ornaments. The sofa was burgundy velvet and the dark green coffee table decorated with ornaments of different colors was perhaps the most beautiful element of the apartment.

You can see the room decoration in the hotel Taj Plaza in addition to the lovely Taj Mahal views in the video I made, so enjoy –
